BERWICKSHIRE

A highly titled part of the country. The Dukes of Northumberland, Roxburghe and Sutherland together with a couple of Earls (Haddington and Home) make this a wealthy wee corner of Scotland. That it should also attract more European agricultural subsidies than any other county possibly rebuts the suggestion that in-breeding has made the aristocracy stupid.

Over 40% of the county is in private hands, with some 50 estates contributing to the social equality.
