On the road to Lochinver - 25% Gradients

When we visited Lochinver for the first time we were totally soaked and desperate for a cup of tea. It was gone six o'clock and we also needed a bank and fuel. We had ridden round the shore road from Kylesku to Lochinver, a very enjoyable and exciting trip with 25% gradients and wonderful views. The road is very narrow and you have to be very attentive because the roads are so winding and hilly but, if you want to see some wonderful scenery then this is the way to go.

Friendly and Helpful
We stopped in the village and asked a young lad where we could get a cup of tea, he was most helpful and told us about the fishermen's mission, the Royal Bank of Scotland and where the garage was (which we had ridden right past!).

  • We fueled up and headed to the Fishermen's mission. What a friendly welcome we had. Towels were provided (without asking) so that we could dry ourselves off, our gloves were put into the tumble drier and we were able to purchase a good hot meal and hearty mugs of tea.

  • The next morning we headed for the Inverkirkaig Falls which are a few miles out of the village. After being on the bike for a couple of days solid (which I am not used to) and having had a 10 mile walk the day before my muscles decided walking up the hill was a good time to protest and I found it hard going at times. However, the views were stunning and the falls were impressive.

  • I was awake early and took off down the village for a walk and to take some photographs. The village is pretty and right on the sea. It is a super base for holidays in the area, a lot of walkers and hill climbers stay here and the Assynt Visitor Centre is situated here. The village is closed early on a Tuesday so be aware that you may not get fuel, etc at that time.
