Latheronwheel

A few hundred metres South of the harbour, this is the spot which is visited first in spring. The cliffs dry quickly after rain and there is a general sheltered aspect. The grades range from low grade scrambles to currently the hardest route in the county Flight from Sadness at E3 5c.

  • As little as ten years ago the amount of recorded rock climbing in Caithness was very limited. In particular the East coast was unexplored.

  • About 500m South of the lighthouse, access is only by abseil. The aspect here is more windswept and exposed. The large skerries just offshore are often packed with the corpulent bodies of a large family group of grey seals.

    The village of Dunbeath is on the main A9 coast road, between Helmsdale and Lybster

  • Dingwall has the northernmost canal in Britain. It was designed by Thomas Telford in 1817. Once the railway arrived the canal fell into disuse and is now the focus of plans by a local group to restore it.

  • Wreck of a steam trawler 300 metres east of the breakwater. Totally broken up.

  • Spectacular above water scenery, The “Brig O’ Trams” is a natural rock bridge connecting a sea stack to the cliff, another large stack is hollow in the centre and is through navigable with a small boat on a calm day. Two boilers lie in the middle of the bay, to their north a cache of anchors can be found.

  • A shallow spit of rock, split into channels (as in second picture), extending far out to sea. Can be shore dived from the farm. Dive on Calm days only, not days like in the picture!

    Surf junkies lovingly refer to the point break as “the graveyard”.
