Hind stalking is an important part of the Achentoul estate conservation. If the number of hinds are not kept down to a manageable level they can do vast amounts of damage to woodland and reduce their own food supplies so much that they die a lingering death by starvation in winter.
The income generated helps in the employment and training aspects of the estate management.

Hind stalking on the estate is carried out between the 21st of October and the 15th of February. The deer range over most of the 26,000 acres of moor and mountain, foraging for food. To preserve the breeding the herd culling is essential to keep the numbers down.

For those who enjoy the stalk this provides some excellent sport, with culling done cleanly and under the supervision of an estate keeper. During a stalk you would be likely to see plenty of wildlife, everything from sundews (the carnivorous plants native to this area) to eagles!

One of Sutherland's great indoor sportsmen has given up a professional career to return to the hills as gamekeeper on Achentoul Estate, Kinbrace.
Angus "Devastating" Ross, the finest darts player to emerge from the Sutherland area, took up his former post on Sir Anthony Nutting's estate when a vacancy occurred earlier this month at Kinbrace.
Angus also pulled out of the recent Scotland v Wales international in Dundee, and missed last Sunday's clash with England at Nottingham.
