Cameron of Lochiel
Cameron of Lochiel

During the 13th century, three MacDonald brothers owned Glengarry.

This didn't please everyone. A plot by Cameron of Lochiel, Fraser of Lovat and Duncan MacDonell of Morar to each kill one of the brothers was hatched and carried out in clinical fashion.

The first brother was killed at dinner by Fraser, the second ambushed and killed by Lochiel's men. The third brother was despatched by Duncan MacDonell at Archie's Rock.

Legend has it that MacDonell and the third brother, Archie, were hunting together. Stopping by a rocky outcrop, MacDonell asked Archie if he knew how to tell the time by using the sun. As his companion gazed up at the sky to accommodate the enquiry, MacDonell separated Archie's head from his shoulders with a single stroke from his broadsword.

As Archie's head rolled down the rocky outcrop, it was heard to groan "two-o-clock. Hence "Archie's Rock".
