| Hangovers - you don't have to feel
like this |
|
In the history of useless advice committed
to words, surely "to prevent a hangover, don't drink",
deserves an Olympic medal for stating the bleeding obvious.
Purveyors of such advice should be rhythmically
beaten to a bloody pulp accompanied the mantra "we fucking
know that, we fucking know that".
The bad news is that if you are going to
drink yourself insensible, then there is a price you are going
to pay for doing so. There is no hangover prevention, but there
are ways of reducing the scale of the hangover.
It is useful to understand what causes
hangovers, before discussing prevention:
| Dehydration |
|
Alcohol causes the kidneys
to excrete more water. You piss more in other words. You could
try not going to the bathroom all night; but you would probably
explode instead. |
| |
|
|
| Toxins |
|
Alcohol contains natural
toxins which, when imbibed in copious quantities, will upset
your body's balance. This is not helped by the artificial
toxins which our good friends the drinks manufacturers introduce
to their products. |

|
| REM Sleep |
|
Rapid Eye Movement (REM)
is the deepest state of sleep. Research demonstrates that
REM is drastically reduced or eliminated altogether when you
are pissed and sleeping. |
So, now you know, what can you do about
it?
| |
|
Before
and during drinking |
| |
|
|
| Eat carbohydrates
and drink water. |
|
Have a good meal before you go start drinking, heavy on
the stodge. This slows the rate of alcohol absortion. Drink
plenty of water too. This builds the fluid levels in your
system.
Snack on carbohydrates as you drink. Cakes, pastries too.
It's hard to do, but drink plenty of water alongside your
alcohol consumption. Ideally, a glass of wine followed by
a glass of water, a pint of beer followed by a half pint
of water.

| |
|
|
| |
|
After
drinking |
| |
|
|
| Drink water
and take vitmains |
|
Absolutely essential. Drink two pints of water and take
two aspirin.
Optional is double the daily dose of vitamins A, B1, B6,
C & D (usually found in multi-vitamin pills). If you
can add potassium, calcium and magnesium supplements, all
the better.
Our advice is to lay these out in an easily accessible
place before you drink. Trying to get it all together when
you can hardly stand is usually problematic.

Sleeping |

|
|
| REM Sleep |
|
Sorry, nothing
you can do. You're pissed and are going to miss out on REM
sleep. |
