Ah yes, "the Bells, the Bells", as the Hunchback of Notre Dame so famously said when asked to name his favourite whisky. Well, he wasn't exactly renowned for his good taste, was he? Although Esmerelda was, to be fair, a most definite piece of top totty.

But we digress.

The origins of the name "Bell" are open to some debate. Some say it's derived from the French "Belle" for beautiful but we're rather more partial to the theory (which we just made up) that the Bell's were the macho side of the famously effeminate Camp bells and simply dropped the Camp aspect to their identity.

Hey, anything's possible in genealogy.

Famous Bell's include;

Maggie Bell

One of Scotland's first true Rock-chicks and five times voted UK Female Vocalist of the Year. A fabulous blues/rock singer in the Janis Joplin mould, her career peaked in the early 70's when she fronted "Stone the Crows" , a fine band who never quite survived the tragic death (electrocuted on stage by a faulty microphone) of their inspirational guitarist, Les Harvey, brother of Alex.

Maggie Bell

Alexander Graham Bell

The Scot who invented the telephone and gave his name to the excrutiatingly banal expression "Give us a bell sometime". Without him there would be no internet and you wouldn't be reading this rubbish now, so if you want someone to blame, it's all his fault.

Bell's Whisky

One of Scotland's best known blended whisky brands, but not a patch, it must be said, on FirstFoot 10 Year Old Single Malt. The Bell's slogan is "Afore ye go", presumably an abbreviated version of "afore ye go discoverin' whit a decent whisky's meant tae taste like."

The Bluebells

Had their first top ten hit in the 80's with "Young at Heart" and then had their second and only other top ten hit in the 90's with ….er….."Young at Heart".

The Liberty Bell

Bugger-all to do with Scotland and included here simply as a blatant sop to our American readers and to increase our search-engine ratings for such things.

  The Liberty Bell

"The Bells"

The precise moment at which all Scotland goes mental every year. "The Bells" is the term given to the chimes of midnight on Hogmanay, after which time the "first footing", and the really serious New Year drinking, can officially begin.
