Fourth
Lanark manager PR Lunatico and his players were sensationally turned
away from training earlier today as the gates to Cowpat Park stadium
were locked under the instructions of the Official Receivers, whoever
they might be.
It is believed that the club are currently in
debt to the tune of some £18 million. Some onlookers blame the club's
current financial crisis on manager Lunatico, who has tried to buy
success with his policy of signing journeymen foreign johnnies desperate
to make one last easy killing before retirement.
Although mostly signed on free transfers under
the Bosman ruling, the wage bill for the playing squad at Cowpat
Park is believed to be in the region of £1 million a week, a hefty
sum for a club with average home attendances of just under 90.
Lunatico, however, remains confident that a rescue
package will be forthcoming and that a buyer with more money than
sense will turn up to save the day.
In a strange twist to today's news, Steve Archibald,
the former Clyde and Scotland star who recently went through a similar
crisis at Airdrie, was unavailable for comment, but a man who once
met him during his playing days at Aberdeen could not deny that
the former Tottenham, Barcelona and Hibs ace might or might not
be interested.
Whatever, the fans deserve the truth.
