The Ulbster Arms Hotel

A traditional hotel based in Halkirk on the River Thurso, offering a superb dining room, comfortable bedrooms, a friendly lounge and staff and some of the best Salmon Fishing in the North.

The hotel offers all of the usual facilities with a conference suite for business meetings and private suites for those wishing a bit more privacy. This charming country hotel has been a comfortable retreat for the estate's shooting and fishing guests for 150 years.

Having recently undergone an extensive refurbishment program to upgrade the dining room and thirteen bedrooms as well as the lounge, Anglers Nook and Smiddy Bar the hotel is very much in keeping with what is expected in a modern busy hotel, yet it still retains its unique Highland charm and unashamedly traditional character.

Situated on the banks of the river Thurso - one of Scotland's foremost salmon-rivers and a favourite of Prince Charles - only a few miles from the hill or a few minutes drive to town or the beach - the Ulbster Arms Hotel couldn't be better located for access to all that the county has to offer. Ulbster Arms Hotel has now 13 rooms within the hotel, 11 of which are double or twins. Each has all of the modern day comforts, including full en-suite bath or shower rooms, direct dial telephones, tea & coffee making facilities, remote controlled televisions, wi-fi internet connectivity, etc.

Conference suite, equipped with white-board, overhead projector and comfortable seating for up to fifteen, has its own dining-room, where delegates can relax and chat informally over a fine lunch or dinner whilst enjoying complete privacy and first-class service. The Gold Room is an ideal venue for seminars, meetings and private dinners, with guests being able to enjoy all of our high quality cuisine and service, yet remain discrete within their own room.

Fishing

The Ulbster is a natural base for its associated sporting activities. They offer salmon and trout fishing - the latter free to hotel guests - on the river or from a boat on our well-stocked lochs. All necessary permits are available from hotel reception, along with a comprehensive selection of Trout and Salmon flies.

Even when the fresh water fishing conditions are not good, we can always arrange sea fishing expeditions as an alternative!! These have proved very successful for many frustrated fresh water anglers and many often take the opportunity to experience a trip through Thurso Bay and into the Pentland Firth for some truly memorable expeditions. Bait and lure fishing for Cod, Coalies, Ling, Wrasse, Mackerel and even fly fishing for Pollock can make for some fantastic sport.

You can even hire rod and reel. They also have some of the finest rough-shooting and deer-stalking you will find anywhere, with professional help and advice from knowledgeable, local ghillies. Private fishing and shooting parties can be arranged
