Jings! See that Gary MacAllister that used
tae play fer Scotland? Whit a bloody season he's just
had wi' Liverpool.
League Cup, FA Cup, Yoo-ayfa Cup medals and
goals frae 40 yard free-kicks! The baldy auld bugger's
been on fire and nae mistake.
At the age of nearly 65 he's a credit tae
the game and an example tae today's youth and that's why
ah'm beggin' him tae come back ootay international retirement
and dae the business fer us in oor next two vital games
in September against Croatia and Belgium.
Ah've telt Gary no tae worry aboot the age
thing because wi' the kinday pressure that's gonnae be
oan us fer these games, experience is gonnae be vital.
In fact, if he agrees tae come back, Gary
will be the youngest member o' the squad ah'm currently
selecting. There's still room fer some o' the younger
lads tae stake a claim but, like ah say, experience will
be the key factor if wir gonnae qualify for the finals
in Nip land.
Nae disrespect tae the new generation, but
ah need guys that've been there, done that. That's why
I've recalled the following senior players intae ma initial
squad of 26;
| Goalkeepers |
| Alan Rough, Ronnie Simpson,
Jim Cruikshank |
| |
| Defenders |
| John Greig, Pat Stanton,
Billy McNeill, Martin Buchan, John Brownlie, Danny
McGrain, Alan Hansen, Gordon McQueen |
| |
| Midfielders |
| Gary MacAllister, Dave
Mackay, Bruce Rioch, Graeme Souness, Don Masson, Lou
Macari |
| |
| Attackers |
| Kenny Dalglish, Denis
Law, Lawrie Reilly, Iain St.John, Joe Jordan, Jimmy
Johnstone, Willie Johnston, Willie Bauld, Charlie
Cooke |
| |
Ah would've picked Billy Bremner and Jim
Baxter as well, but they werenae answering their telephones
when ah called.
Still, there's mair than enough experience
in there tae really rattle these young upstart Belgie
bastards and save me from an early sacking when ma contract
expires in December.
So, that's that sorted, and noo ah'm away
fer ma Summer holi's in Torremolinos.
It's a braw wee place, full of bonny wobbly
totty and cheapo bevvy.
That Rod Stewart laddie that supports Scotland
lives just up the road and whenivver we go there he's
aye asking us round tae his place fer a wee jug o' sangria
and some advice on picking up the birds.
Seems tae work, mind. And ah've nae objection
in giving it to him.
See ye in September.
