Edinburgh remains a city gripped by fear today as the serial gunman terrorising the normally sedate streets of Scotland's Capital city continues to evade capture.

Yesterday, at 1.00pm precisely, a single shot rang out from the direction of Edinburgh Castle, terrifying shoppers in Princes Street.

A police spokesman said "There's definitely a pattern emerging. He strikes at 1.00pm every day - it's almost as if you can set your watch by him. We wouldn't be surprised if it happened again at the same time tomorrow."

Although nobody has actually yet been hit by the gunman, the terror that this seemingly motive-less shooting spree has inflicted on the people of Scotland's Capital is only too evident.

A tourist who was in Princes Street at the time of yesterday's shooting told FirstFoot that he and his wife were just coming out of Debenhams when he heard "an almighty bang loud enough to wake the dead. I don't mind telling you I shat myself and had to go back into Debenhams for a new pair of pants."

Another eye-witness, still visibly shaken, spoke of seeing "a wisp of smoke that definitely came from somewhere up on the Castle ramparts just as the shot rang out."

The one-o-clock gun which has been fired from Edinburgh Castle since 1861

As the evidence points increasingly towards the shooter being a member of the armed forces based at the Castle, an MOD representative who refused to be named would say only "The One 0' Clock gun is an Edinburgh institution. You're just being silly."

FirstFoot refuses to allow such dismissive comments to deter us from the truth, however, and we will not sleep easy until we know this madman has been apprehended and is behind bars.
